Free Agent Signings – Who is going where?

This is a follow-up post on Free Agent Signing day. The first day is over and players have been relocated. This is a list of the big signings from today.

Curtis McElhinney

download

Goaltender, Curtis McElhinney, has signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs on a 2 year contract with an AAV of $850k.

My Take on This Signing

I personally think this was a good move by the Toronto Maple Leafs. After trading away Bernier the Leafs needed a backup goalie. McElhinney is a fairly young and experienced goaltender that will be a strong backup for Andersen.

Trevor Daley

download

Defenseman, Trevor Daley, has signed with the Detroit Red Wings on a 3 year contract with an AAV of $3.178 M.

My Take on This Signing

I like this signing by the Wings. Trevor Daley is a strong, experienced defenseman (3 cups) that could help the rebuild of this team. Although Daley is a good player, I personally feel that $3.178 million a year is a little much.

Dan Girardi

download-1

Defenseman, Dan Girardi, has signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning on a 2 year contract with an AAV of $3 M.

My Take on This Signing

Dan Girardi is a very experienced player that will block any shot coming his way. The Lightning have struggled defensively for the past couple of years and this might be just what they need to be a little more successful. I also think that 2 years is perfect for a player like Girardi. He is nearing the end of his career and most likely won’t be very helpful after 2 years.

Steve Mason

download

Goaltender, Steve Mason, has signed with the Winnipeg Jets on a 2 year contract with an AAV of $4.1 M AAV.

My Take on This Signing

In my opinion this price is WAY to high. Steve Mason hasn’t been on his game in 2 years and does not deserve $4.1M. Also, the Jets already have a starting and backup goalie so I do not see the point in signing another goalie. I do not agree with this move by the Jets.

Michael Del Zotto

download

Defenseman, Michael Del Zotto, has signed with the Vancouver Canucks on a 2 year contract with an AAV of $3 M.

My Take on This Signing

In my opinion Del Zotto is nobody to get excited about. If Vancouver needed defense there are definitely some better and younger players they could’ve signed. I do not think that this was a good move by the Canucks.

Ondrej Pavelec

download

Goaltender, Ondrej Pavelec, has signed with the New York Rangers on a 1 year contract with an AAV of #1.3 M.

My Take on This Signing:

I have mixed emotions about this signing. Although the Rangers did need a backup goalie after trading away Annti Raanta, they could have stuck with Skapski. Pavelec is not a talented goalie but Benoit Allaire (NYR goalie coach) can turn any backup goalie into a starter. Pavelec might not be good now but I think he has lots of potential at a very low price.

Karl Alzner

download

Defenseman, Karl Alzner, has signed with the Montreal Canadiens on a 5 year contract with an AAV of $4.625 M.

My Take on This Signing:

In my opinion, this was a very bad move by the Canadiens. Don’t get me wrong, Alzner is a very talented defenseman. But, the last thing MTL needed was another defenseman, especially for the amount of money they are paying him.

Brian Boyle

download-1

Center, Brian Boyle, has signed with the New Jersey Devils on a 2 year contract with an AAV of $2.55 M.

My Take on This Signing:

Brian Boyle is a very talented player with a huge heart. I think this was a great signing by the Devils and could possibly help them in the rebuilding process.

Matt Hunwick

download-1

Defenseman, Matt Hunwick, has signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins on a 3 year contract with an AAV of $2.25 M.

My Take on This Signing:

Hunwick has been very hot lately. If he continues to play like he did last playoffs, this will be a great pickup by the Penguins. Although, I do think that $2.25 M is a little much but Hunwick definitely has some potential.

Nick Bonino

download

Center, Nick Bonino, has signed with the Nashville Predators on a 4 year contract with an AAV of  $4.1 M.

My Take on This Signing:

I think this is the best move made so far today. Bonino is an extremely talented and experienced player and is just what Nashville needs. This could be the final step to finishing up this Nashville roster and finally winning a cup.

Patrick Sharp

download

Left wing, Patrick Sharp, will be returning to the Chicago Blackhawks on a 1 year, $1 million dollar contract.

My Take on This Signing:

There isn’t much to say about this deal. The Blackhawks got Sharp back and he is a lot cheaper now. Is their idea of rebuilding bringing back their cup team?

Dmitry Kulikov

download

Defenseman, Dmitry Kulikov, has signed with the Winnipeg Jets on a 3 year contract with an AAV of $4.33 M.

My Take on This Signing:

I personally think that the Jets are giving Kulikov far too much money for the player he is. I do not think this is a good move by the Jets.

Brian Elliot

download-1

Goaltender, Brian Elliot, has signed with the Philledelphia Flyers on 2 year contract making $2.7 M a year.

My Take on This Signing:

I think this was a good move by the Flyers. After losing Steve Mason they were in need of a starting goalie. Brian Elliot is perfect for this position because he is a strong and experinced goaltender. It was also a good idea not to give him anymore than 2 years due to his age.

Anders Nilsson

download

Goaltender, Anders Nilsson has signed with the Vancouver Canucks on a 2 year contract with an AAV of $2.5 M.

My Take on This Signing:

After losing starting goalie, Miller, the Canucks needed somebody to fill that spot. Next season it looks like Nilsson will be playing backup for Markstrom. I like this signing by Vancouver because Nilsson is a young goalie that will be able to play well in net when needed.

Sam Gagner

download

Center, Sam Gagner has signed with the Vancouver Canucks on a 3 year contract with an AAV of $3.15 M.

My Take on This Signing:

I love this signing by the Canucks. Gagner is a good, young player that has tons of potential. This could definitely help them during their rebuilding process

Jonathan Bernier

download

Goaltender, Jonathan Bernier is heading the Colorado Avalanche on a 1 year, $2.75 M dollar contract.

My Take on This Signing:

Bernier, in my opinion, is amongst the worst goaltenders in the NHL. This is an awful move by the Avalanche due to the fact they should start their rebuilding process after having one of the worst seasons by a team in history.

Kevin Shattenkirk

download

Defenseman, Kevin Shattenkirk is going back to his home state with the New York Rangers on a 4 year contract with an AAV of $6.65 M.

My Take on This Signing:

Although Shattenkirk would’ve fit in well no matter what team he was signed to, the Rangers are a very good fit for him. The team needed a new defenseman after losing Dan Girardi. Shattenkirk maybe be the final piece for this Rangers team to make them a cup contender.

Justin Williams

download

Right wing, Justin Williams has signed with the Carolina Hurricanes on a 2 year contract with an AAV of $4.5 M.

My Take on This Signing:

I think this is a great move by the Hurricanes. They took back a player who was a key member in their ’06 Stanley Cup team. Maybe this will possibly bring them back to the playoffs.

Martin Hanzal

download

Center, Martin Hanzal is heading south to play for the Dallas Stars on a 3 year contract with an AAV of $4.75 M.

My Take on This Signing:

I personally think that this signing was a great move by Dallas. Hanzal is a very talented player that can put up impressive stats.

Martin Jones

download

Goaltender, Martin Jones has resigned with the San Jose Sharks on a 6 year, $5.75 M AAV contract.

My Take on This Signing:

This signing was an extension on the Sharks starting goalie’s contract. This was a good move by the Sharks by keeping a player that has been strong for them all these years.

Marc-Edouard Vlasic

download

Defenseman, Marc-Edouard Vlasic has signed with the San Jose Sharks on a huge 8 year, $7M AAV contract.

My Take on This Signing:

This signing was a great move by the Sharks in my opinion. Vlasic is a very strong and experienced player that plays great with guys like Brent Burns. Vlasic has helped his team be competitive every year and will most likely continue to that on this 8 year extension.

Cam Fowler

download

Defenseman, Cam Fowler has signed with the Anaheim Ducks on a 8 year contract with an AAV of $6.5M.

My Take on This Signing:

This extension was a great signing by the Ducks. Fowler has been the heart of the Ducks defense and is an amazing addition to the team.

Ron Hainsey

download

Defenseman, Ron Hainsey has signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs on a 2 year contract with an AAV of $3M.

My Take on This Signing:

Hainsey will be a great fit for this Toronto team. He put up 8 points last playoffs in 25 games and helped his team win the cup. This Toronto  team need veteran players to balance out their extremely young team with kids like Marner and Matthews.

Ryan Miller

download

Goaltender, Ryan Miller has signed with the Anaheim Ducks on a 2 year contract with an AAV of $2M.

My Take on This Signing:

After this signing Ryan Miller will back up Gibson in net. I think Miller is a very strong backup but doesn’t deserve the 4 million dollar contract.

Joe Thornton

download

Center, Joe Thornton has resigned with the San Jose Sharks on a 1 year, $6M contract.

My Take on This Signing:

Joe Thornton has been a key component in this competitive Sharks team. He continues to put up goals and assists despite his age. Thornton at the age of 38 was still able to put up 50 points in 79 games played.

Radim Vrbata

download-1

Right wing, Radim Vrbata has signed with the Flordia Panthers on a 1 year, $2.5 Million dollar contract.

My Take on This Signing:

This signing was a great move by FLA. Vrbata is a experienced player that can put up points. This might be just what FLA needs to make their team better and more competitive.

Nate Thompson

download

Center, Nate Thompson has signed with the Ottawa Senators on a 2 year, $1.65M AAV Contract.

My Take on This Signing:

Nate Thompson is a great player that is perfect for this Ottawa team. Although he might not score too often, he is an amazing penalty killer and is a great face-off man.

Chris Kunitz

download-1

Left wing, Chris Kunitz has signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning on a 1 year, $2M contract.

My Take on This Signing:

Kunitz is a great player and this is a big loss on the Penguins side. He will help this struggling Lightning team get back to the finals. He is a very experienced player that will be a great addition to the Lightning.
